No. 4 — $900,000 · Middle Ground Lighthouse, Newport News, Virginia

Middle Ground Lighthouse, built in 1891 and surrounded by the open water of Hampton Roads, still serves as an aid to navigation, and it can be reached only by private boat. It overlooks a busy shipping channel near the waters of the Monitor-Merrimack naval battle. It sold for $900,000.
The current owners restored the six-story lighthouse while keeping its historic character. Inside are the original heart pine floors, hand-painted murals, custom curved furnishings, a curved staircase, a kitchen and dining area, and one bedroom with additional sleeping space. There is an enclosed outdoor shower, and the bath uses a marine sanitation system approved by the Coast Guard.
Life offshore runs on its own systems: solar power with battery storage, rainwater collection, mini-split heating and cooling, and a diesel generator as backup. The lighthouse was sold furnished and comes with a dedicated service boat.
