United Wholesale Mortgage has created a chief investment officer position for the first time and filled it with Vandad Fartaj, who spent 15 years running investments at PennyMac. The Pontiac, Mich. lender announced the appointment on Sept. 28, 2026.
Fartaj will lead capital markets initiatives and investment strategies and work across the company to shape its capital strategy and portfolio management, according to the announcement. UWM described the role as newly created and framed it as part of positioning the company “for its next phase of growth.”
“At UWM, we believe great companies are built by great people, and Vandy is exactly the type of leader we want on our team,” said Mat Ishbia, president and chief executive of UWM. “He’s earned a reputation as one of the best in the business through his deep capital markets knowledge, relentless work ethic and proven track record of delivering results.”
Fartaj, who goes by Vandy, said the appeal was the stage the job comes at. “The opportunity to help build and lead the investment function at this stage is incredibly compelling,” he said in the announcement.
The role arrives less than two months after a $2.05 billion recapitalization
The timing is the part worth noting. On Aug. 5, 2026, UWM Holdings Corporation announced a $2.05 billion strategic capital partnership with Oaktree Capital Management and the Ishbia family’s SFS Group Capital, structured as preferred equity plus warrants. The company said proceeds would go primarily toward repaying existing debt and mortgage servicing rights financing facilities and strengthening its equity base and liquidity.
That package also included a planned $400 million rights offering to Class A shareholders, with a record date of Oct. 2, 2026 β four days from the date of Fartaj’s appointment. RealtyWire covered the Oaktree partnership when it was announced.
A lender that has just taken on a large slug of preferred equity, is about to run a rights offering, and finances a servicing book through MSR facilities has a materially more complicated balance sheet to manage than one that simply originates and sells. Creating a dedicated investment seat at the top of the company is a reasonable answer to that β though UWM did not draw the connection itself, and the announcement makes no reference to the August transaction.
Who Fartaj is
UWM said Fartaj brings three decades of experience across mortgage banking, capital markets, investing and finance. His 15 years at PennyMac included a stint as that company’s chief investment officer, a role in which, UWM said, he “played a key role in developing investment strategies, strengthening market positioning and driving long-term value.”
The company described him as having built “scalable capital markets and investment platforms” and said he is known in the industry for his integrity and collaborative leadership style. Those are UWM’s characterizations of its own hire, not independent assessments.
A wholesale-only lender in a 7% market
UWM describes itself as the nation’s largest home mortgage lender, the largest wholesale mortgage lender for 11 consecutive years and the largest purchase lender in the country, originating conforming and government loans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Those are the company’s own characterizations.
Selling through one channel concentrates the company’s fortunes in it β an advantage when broker share is rising, a constraint when originations contract.
Originations are contracting. Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed-rate average at 7.03% as of Sept. 24, 2026, up from 6.95% the week before and 6.30% a year earlier. At those levels refinancing is largely off the table and purchase lending carries the volume β which is the segment UWM says it leads.
The company has also been in court with rivals, including a suit from Rocket that UWM called baseless.
UWM Holdings Corporation trades under the ticker UWMC. More mortgage coverage is on RealtyWire.
