Chief Justice John Roberts Sells Chevy Chase, Md., Home for $3.44 Million

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and his wife sold their longtime Chevy Chase, Md., home for $3.44 million -- more than $200,000 over asking -- just weeks after quietly listing it.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and his wife, Jane Roberts, have sold their longtime home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, for $3.44 million, more than $200,000 above its $3.2 million asking price, according to Realtor.com’s reporting, which cites public sale records and credits the Washington Business Journal with first reporting the listing.

Records show the Robertses paid $1.23 million for the property in November 2003 — two years before George W. Bush nominated John Roberts to lead the Supreme Court, a post he has held since 2005. The couple listed the home June 26, 2026, and the listing was updated within days to show it was already under offer, a fast turnaround for a property that saw only limited public marketing. The sale has now officially closed at the final price of $3.44 million.

Property details

Built in 1923, the home offers more than 5,100 square feet of living space on a lot of nearly 10,000 square feet in a leafy section of Chevy Chase near the Chevy Chase Club. Listing details described an open floor plan with a sizable kitchen, formal dining room, family room and living area, along with a built-in sound system, a butler’s pantry and crown moldings; the Washington Business Journal’s original listing report also noted the home’s “attractive stone walls” and “perfectly proportioned formal rooms.” The listing agent was Lenora “Muffin” Lynham of Washington Fine Properties LLC.

Chevy Chase has long ranked among the wealthiest Washington, D.C.-area suburbs and counts other prominent figures among its residents, including fellow Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. It is not yet clear where the Robertses plan to relocate; the couple also owns a vacation home on Hupper Island in Maine, purchased in 2006 and expanded a decade later, where they have spent summers for years.

What it means

Verified facts: The Roberts family sold their Chevy Chase home for $3.44 million, roughly 2.8 times what they paid for it in 2003, closing within weeks of listing and above asking price.

RealtyWire analysis: While $3.44 million is well below the price point RealtyWire typically covers for single-property sales, a sitting Chief Justice of the United States selling a longtime family residence is a notable-person transaction that illustrates the broader appreciation seen across affluent D.C.-area suburbs over the past two decades — a more than 175% gain since 2003 in a market that has weathered multiple housing cycles.
