Three homes on the water in Middlesex County and two large Colonials in Avon made up the week's most expensive sales.

Hartford, Connecticut Metro Area Top 5 Home Sales: Waterfront Homes in Essex, Westbrook and Clinton Share the List With Two in Avon

These are the highest-priced home sales reported in the Hartford, Connecticut, metro area for the week ending October 4, 2026. Together the five sold for a combined $10.86 million.

The list splits between two very different settings. Three of the homes are in Middlesex County, in Essex, Westbrook and Clinton, and each has a place on the water. The other two are Colonials in Avon, in Hartford County, which sold for a combined $3,380,916. Every one of the five is a single-family home.

No. 1 — $3,000,000 · 17 Scholes Lane, Essex, Connecticut

The oldest home on this week’s list is also the one at the top. Built in 1784, the clapboard Colonial at 17 Scholes Lane stands in Essex Village with more than 100 feet of private river frontage, along with a recently updated bulkhead, and it sold for $3,000,000.

Inside, the 18th-century fabric is still plain to see: original paneling, wide-plank floors and period doors that keep their old hardware. Three wood-burning fireplaces still work. One is in the living room, which has a floor-to-ceiling bow window facing the water. The renovation was planned around the view. Its centerpiece is a kitchen under a vaulted ceiling, lit by oversized windows, with custom cabinetry, a natural stone island and Waterworks fixtures. The primary suite is on the first floor, and its bathroom is finished in marble on the floors and walls. Downstairs, a renovated lower level serves as an office or family room, with water views and a private entrance from outside.

The home has three bedrooms, two full baths and a half bath, and 2,092 square feet of living space, the smallest on the list, on 0.32 acres. Professionally landscaped grounds include perennial gardens, a lawn, mature hedges, stone walls and several patios. A boathouse stands at the edge of the water, and a detached garage sits on the property. The property last sold for $1.175 million in 2021.

No. 2 — $2,725,000 · 187 Old Mail Trail, Westbrook, Connecticut

At 187 Old Mail Trail in Grove Beach, the home sits on a sandy beach, with Long Island Sound to one side and Safe Harbor Marina to the other. It went under contract six days after it was listed and sold for $2,725,000, which was $350,000 above its asking price of $2.375 million.

The home was rebuilt from the ground up in 1996, then remodeled throughout in 2017, with more work done in 2025. The kitchen was custom designed, with quartzite counters, custom cabinets and a six-burner Wolf gas range. Walnut floors run through the rooms, the bathrooms are floored in marble, and coffered ceilings, wainscoting and built-ins carry the finish work. Hurricane windows face the beach, and the home has a Sonos sound system, a whole-house generator, a new bluestone patio and a new outdoor shower. There are four bedrooms, three full baths and a half bath in 2,461 square feet on 0.26 acres.

Across the street, on the marina side, the property has a two-car garage with a third bay for storage and 900 square feet of finished space above it. Beyond the guest parking behind the garage is a private, permitted dock, and two jet ski docks come with the home. The property last sold for $1.585 million in 2019.

Built in 2006, it is the newest home on the list, and its 1.45 acres make up the largest lot of the five. It sold for $1,880,000.

A two-story foyer runs from the front of the home to the back, where it opens onto a deck and a bluestone patio with a custom stone fireplace overlooking the grounds. The recently remodeled kitchen has inset cabinetry, marble counters and backsplash, an oversized island and a breakfast nook, and it opens to a large family room. A butler’s pantry with a wet bar leads to the formal dining room, and a private study has its own fireplace and mahogany built-ins. Coffered ceilings, crown molding and wainscoting appear throughout the interior.

The home has five bedrooms, four full and two half baths, and 5,594 square feet of living space. The primary suite has a new marble bath and a walk-in closet, and each of the four other bedrooms has its own bath. A floored third level and a walk-out lower level leave room to expand. The property last sold for $1.25 million in 2021.

It has four bedrooms, two full baths and a half bath, and 2,197 square feet of living space, along with a full basement, on a 3,920-square-foot lot, the smallest of the five. It sold for $1,755,000, just above its asking price of $1.75 million. The property last sold for $770,000 in 2020.

A chandelier hangs in the foyer, which opens to a living room with a fireplace and to the dining room. The white kitchen has a large island, a walk-in pantry, a Thermador appliance suite and a Subzero refrigerator. A sunny breakfast room has an eight-foot French door to a private, fenced backyard that backs onto open space. Out back are a large patio and a timber-framed shed measuring 20 by 14 feet. The family room has a fireplace and a coffered ceiling, and a study with cherry built-ins sits behind French doors.
